Learn the Three Essentials of Healthy Eating

Posted September 2009 by Pam Skinner

After teaching women’s fitness programs for almost 30 years, I’ve always taught my students three words to master these 3 key aspects of healthy eating:
1. Protein
2. Water
3. Fiber.

In class, while doing crunches, I would have my students shout out sources of
protein “Turkey!” “Eggs!” “Low-Fat Cottage Cheese!” “Tuna!” “Tofu!” “Lean
Meat!”. I taught them to shoot for ‘half their body weight in protein’ (for example
a woman who weighs 150 lbs, would try to eat at least 75 grams of protein per day).
Protein keeps you full, helps to build muscle, which increases your metabolism.
Easy breezy!

Our next drill was about water sources. During walking lunges, they would shout out
“Plain Water!” “Propel!” “Herbal Tea!” “Crystal Light” “Low Calorie Flavored Waters!”
All good choices! Adequate hydration helps prevent headaches, aids digestion, and flushes toxins from your system. Try to drink about 8 glasses a day.

Finally, the tricky one...fiber! On to pushups.. “Fruits!” “Vegetables!” “Fiber One Bars!”
“Beans!” “Avocados!” “Kashi Cereal!” “Orowheat Double Fiber Bread!” “All Bran
Lemonade Mix!”. Fantastic suggestions! Fiber fills you up, helps control blood sugar,
helps digestion, and relieves constipation. Try to get 25-35 grams per day.

Next time you are working out...test yourself! See if you can quickly name at least
five sources of the ‘magic three’..protein, water, fiber. (That doesn’t mean a glass
of chardonnay, or some dark chocolate is off limits...a girl’s gotta live a little!)
